Tivo and Media Center

Our first episode! We introduce ourselves and discuss what it's like to be married to an early adopter. We explain DVRs - specifically Tivo and Media Center.

Tracey's "How to" for using Media Center:

Pick up the remote and choose the button that says “watch tv”. This will automatically turn on the receiver, the TV, and the x box. If you come to a green x box screen instead of the media center – hit the button again. You will start at the “recorded tv” menu option on the media center. Hit it ok button to look at these and pick one or… To watch normal satellite dish – use the “live tv” button and channels up and down. To play a DVD – open the disc drive in the x box and insert the dvd. Usually it will start playing, but if it doesn’t, navigate to the “play dvd” menu option at the bottom of the x box menus. If you get into trouble: If you need to reset the media center (it locks up or something), at the login screen you can use the arrows on the remote to navigate and the password for the “media center” user is xxxxx. Then hit “enter” on the remote. That will start everything back up .

Awesome show!!
And Tivo still rocks and for now, I will stay with my Tivo for a long time.
There is a new Series 3 Tivo (called the Lite version) that is only $299 and includes almost everything the normal Series 3 has.
Its HD, you can transfer recordings between Tivos and your computer, its hooked up to the internet allowing access to podcasts like this, and there's a partnership with Amazon allowing you to buy/rent movies and TV shows and have them directly downloaded onto your Tivo.
Tivo is FAR from dead... its still quite popular and running strong. When I finally go HD, I'm not going to use the cable company's DVR... I'm keeping my Tivo or getting the new Series3!! Oh, the Tivo I currently use also has a DVD player/recorder in it... so I can transfer movies to DVD as well. Thats awesome!!
My Tivo can do anything MediaCenter can do and its EASIER to use!! :) :) :)

I'm sorry my geeky husband had to defile your blog with his glory-to-Tivo rant. He's still begging for the series 3, but we paid for lifetime on the series 2 and damn if I'm not holding him to the promise. It's the same logic that I used to force him to use the PS2 as a DVD player since that was his big rationalization for buying it.

Our biggest problem is getting him to install all the gadgets he buys. For instance, he had a grand 3-Tivo-2-computer scheme. We bought said Tivos (already had the computers, of course). He got the main living room up and running then took a break. One Tivo remains unused, unopened, and in the closet. The only reason we have the second one installed downstairs is because after a few months of waiting I got fed up and did it myself... but I digress.

Next show, can you rant about men who claim they want to purchase a Wii "so the kids will get some exercise"? :)

Loved the podcast. Keep 'em coming!!
